ex-husband in prision

My parents have been divorced for a long time, but with in the past couple of years my father was put in federal prision. My mom still has a 16yr old at home and now does not receive her child support or alimony. She is struggling pretty bad financially. I was wondering if there was anyway she could get help and how? She tried welfare, but they said she made too much. What a croke.
If anyone has any advice, it would be appreciated.

If your mother did make too much she would not be entitled to welfare...It depends on her income. What kind of help do you like?

If the father of the child is in prison, he makes no income ( expcet for that 1.00 a hour at some work details sometimes)

If he has bank accounts, houses, cars and the such, and is behind on his support, she can try and get those properties. but if he has no money, there is nothing she can get from him.

Welfare is based on income of the person requesting it, she can check for aid for dependent childen, and wic and programs for the child which still have guide lines but allows more earnings.

For example in our state ( TN) to get TN Care ( medicaid) a family of 3 have to earn less than 750 dollars a month but they can get other benifits if they make less than 39,000 a year.

What state is she in, and how much is her income?

All of his properties have been taken away. So she can't do that. She lives in Utah, and makes around $500 every two weeks. Just any kind of help, like if there is some sort of group or organization that helps ex-spouses of convicts.
