I don't know about all states, but in Texas you can fill out the papers yourself as long as it's an uncontested divorce and there are no children involved. You have to pay a filling fee which a heck of a lot cheaper than paying a lawyer. You should be able to find about your state's requirements on the internet.
Mu first question would be "are you or your child in danger?". If the answer is no, my second would be, "have you tried everything, and I do mean everything, to get help"? I've been down this road, and it is hard. I divorced my wife with certain expectations of what my future would be like. It is VERY different than I had pictured. If there is anyway to seek counseling for both of you, nearly anything can be worked out. Raising a kid on your own will be hard, and your free time will be very limited. If there is a possiblitiy of danger to you or your child than I definately support you get to a "safe place" adn evaluate your situation. There is no easy answer, every situation is different, but, I just know from my experience and from personal friends in this situation. There are no winners. If anything can be salvaged, you need to try. Just my .02
