Serious memory situation here.

I recently purchased a stick of pc133 512mb memory as a simple upgrade to my board that already had a 256mb pc133 chip in it. After installation by an IT professional, the stick burnt as well as my board. Is it possible for defective memory to fry your motherboard? I was standing there and saw the stick was placed flush and perfectly into the board. Thanks for your help, please be detailed if possible the concerns quite a bit of money.
