Microphone Problem: No Mic/Line in???

I've been trying to get one of my friend's microphone to work for months. I've tried finding a driver, and reinstalling the soundcard driver/software. One thing about my friends computer that puzzles me though is the fact that she doesn't have a mic/line-in option in her audio controls. Every computer I've seen has had that option for your microphone, but hers doesn't. The only option she has is the sound card, and I'm wondering if it that's part of the problem.

Does anyone have any other ideas why the mic wouldn't work on her computer (I've already tested it on other computers and it works fine)? Or how I'd get the mic/line-in option?

Meed some further information. Operating system? Computer make and model number? There is an advanced button on the sound mixer that allows you to view more of the mixer options. Have you clicked on that to see if the mic/line option is there. If so, it may be muted. Hope this helps.

Um, the computer is a Dell I believe. Not sure exactly what model. It's running Windows XP. I have looked at the advanced button on the sound mixer as well, and neither the mic or line-in options are muted. I've tried muting, unmuting, almost everything I can think of.

Go to

Control Panel
Sound. Speech, and Audio Devices
Sound and Audio Devices
Click on "Audio" tab
Check if there is a default device lsited (if any)
If the down arrow to the right of the Default Device windows is active click and see if you can select a device.
If it is grayed out it means that there are no drivers installed or they are corrupted. You will then need to get the correct drivers from the Dell Website (you can use your express code number from the machine to navigate there once you are on the Dell website).
Download drivers and follow instructions for installation.
If that does not fix your sound problem, let me know as we will go further.
