end task on XP

I need to know how to "end task" running programs, so I can install new programs on XP

Press ALT-CTRL-DELETE (only once!), and select "task manager", then the 'applications' tab.
Highlight the task you want to end and press "end task".
In the 'processes' tab you can end processes similarly.
