stained teeth on toddler

My son started getting brown stains on his teeth at about age 2. The pediatric dentist stated it was iron stains (my son does not take any iron suppliments) and polished most of the stains off. One to two months later the stains returned and have gotten worse. I have another appt. with the same pediatric dentist but cannot understand why the stains return so quickly. He has a normal and healthy diet, teeth brushed twice daily, and has not used bottles since he turned one. He still uses a pacifier and likes to put almost everything in his mouth (ie. keys on key ring, Thomas the trains stuff) despite continued efforts to get him to stop. Any suggestions would be helpful.

If You Have Well Water , It Could Have A High Iron Content..but Usually
Normal Brushing Would Fix That. If He Takes Any Reg Vitamins Check Iron Content On That...good Luck....

thanks for the suggestions, however, he does not drink well water nor does he take vitamines - it was suggested I check the acidity in his system (ph) but that also turned out normal.

Is brushing his teeth that last he does before going to bed or will he have a snack or drinks after that?

Some antibiotics, such as tretracycline, can cause tooth staining, also fluoride supplements, which pediatricians routinely prescribe. Is your son getting either of these? I think you should find out what's causing it, just so you know. If the dentist does't have any answers, try a pediatrician. My well water has lots of iron and my kids teeth have not turned brown....

I've heard that excessive flouride levels will do this, either in the water or as supplements. Ask your pediatrician.

Could be from exposure to certain vitamins or eating certain foods. Try brushing his teeth with a little baking soda.
I don't think its caused by excessive flouride levels as the effects usually are much gradual.
