Aligners put teeth into place (like braces), retainers hold their position after they've been moved orthodontically.

Well, I've had braces in my teens and still have the retainers which I used afterwards for a few months but my cousin just had Invisalign and they looked practically the same. She's now gutted to have spent nearly £5000 to have it done here in the UK.
