How can a rotten tooth not have pain?

Some months ago, my husband's tooth fell out. I was shocked. My husband has not been to the dentist in years. For some reason he just stopped going. Some nights, he is so tired from work, he just falls asleep without brushing his teeth. Well, apparently, his tooth must have gotten rotten and just fell out. I have begged him to go to the dentist and he won't. My question is, how can a tooth become rotten and fall out and the person not feel any pain? Sometimes I wish he would feel pain and be forced to go to the dentist. I can't understand how he doesn't feel any pain. Is it possible to get tooth decay without any pain?
