Its not illegal to date, but in some states its illegal to have sexual interaction until the age of 18.

It might be assumed that intercourse is occurring so it's not a good idea. And while this number of years difference would be no big deal if you were for example 41 and 47, at your ages of 23 and 17 the difference is huge and it's a very bad idea.

And it's frowned upon for some very good reasons. 17 year olds should know that only an immature 23 year old would consider dating them - even if they are very mature themselves. And 23 year olds should know that dating a 17 year old invites involvement of parents and the law that they should not even consider taking on in a romantic relationship as adults. It's ridiculous!

Both ages are young, so wait until the 17 year old is 18 and then if you must try dating, at least nobody will end up in jail over it.

What state do you live in?

Illegal or not... what would a 23 year old want with a 17 year old. That is two different stages in life. And in many states it is "illegal" because if someone has a problem with it and takes it to the legal system and just says "hey, I know there is more then just hanging out going on." well there can be a prison sentence. I know a guy that happened to. You have to be really careful and I would say wait till the other party is 18.

There are no laws regarding dating, but sexual activity can get you in trouble.

However I must agree with the others. The two of you are at different stages of your lives. She is still in school looking to sow wild oats. You should be close to graduating college and starting your career.
