I believe the law in Canada says once you are 14, it is okay.

CaptainForest agrees: Correct. 14 is the age of sexual consent in Canada.

The current age of consent in Canada is indeed 14, though they are trying to change it to 16

CaptainForest agrees: Correct. Harper is trying to raise it to 16, but as of yet, he has not. And he might not. He does only have a minority govt. But, the NDP have shown support in the bill, so it might pass. I hear it’s the Liberals who are holding up the bill.

If you were 21 and he was 25, the four year difference that you are now, I would not have a thing against it, for your maturity would be almost level. But for a 14 year old girl to be dating a 19 year old boy the maturity level is just not on a par. But if you are a level headed girl and you feel like you can handle any situations that come up, I would say go ahead and enjoy your teen years but remember his teen years are almost over.

shygrneyzs agrees: Agrees - the maturity level is a valid question.

I don't think it's "legal".

You must be 18.

Now, should you NOT date him? It's your choice...

Comments on this post
CaptainForest disagrees: Age of sexual consent in Canada is 14, NOT 18. Therefore, it is “legal”.

As shygrneyzs said, the age of consent is 14 here in Canada, so it is legal for you two to date.

NytCrawlr brought up a point about it possibly changing, but don't worry about that. By then time it does (if it does), you will be 16 or very very close to 16.

letmetellu brings up a good point about your maturity level. Are you mature enough to date a 19 yr old? If you feel you are, then go for it.

Yes, I am 100000000% sure.

Where have you been hearing things from?

According to: Canada's Legal Age of Consent to Sexual Activity (PRB99-3E))

CURRENT LAW

The Criminal Code does not now criminalize consensual sexual activity with or between persons 14 or over, unless it takes place in a relationship of trust or dependency, in which case sexual activity with persons over 14 but under 18 can constitute an offence, notwithstanding their consent. Even consensual activity with those under 14 but over 12 may not be an offence if the accused is under 16 and less than two years older than the complainant. The exception, of course, is anal intercourse, to which unmarried persons under 18 cannot legally consent, although both the Ontario Court of Appeal(3) and the Quebec Court of Appeal(4) have struck down the relevant section of the Criminal Code.
