Yeah it is old technology so why isn't that our answer?

everyone thinks coal mining is stuck in the 1930s when they downed mountains in West Va. to get to the coal.

Also there is still a question of emissions.

But you are onto something . If congress wanted to get their heads out of where the sun don't shine they could suggest and give incentive to the auto makers to make all cars ;either hybrid or totally fuel driven to have flex fuel engines . That way there would be a market competition over which liquid fuel is used to power the cars.

You mention coal and they picture Pittsburgh back when you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.

fyi current coal reserve is 491 billion tons.
