My husband got a DUI in Alabama 5 years ago. He paid his fines, took his DUI classes and surrendered his lisence in Alabama. Since then, he has moved to Georgia. He just got a letter in the mail a few weeks ago saying his lisence is suspended in Georgia for that DUI. Does anyone know the statue of limitations on this? When we contacted the people in Georgia about it, they were no help at all. They said you'll have to take the DUI class again in Georgia. Is this true? It looks like it's Alabama's fault that they didn't send any information to Georgia until now. I don't see how he can be pentalized in Georgia for this after 5 years. Any help or information on this will be grately appreciated!

Contact Alabama and ask them where the paperwork disappeared to and why didn't Georgia get notification. You have to start in Alabama to get this cleared up. Georgia is second on the list to get things cleared up. If the computer shows something is missing the DUI can't be released in Alabama. Does he have any documents showing he attended DUI class? Does he remember when and where? If he does remember, call up that organization and get the copy of the class record yourself and send to Alabama.

Of course he can't find all of his paperwork, since it was 5 years ago. He went to city court in Talledega. He's tried to contact Alabama a couple of times and they're just giving him the run around. This could really mess up his life right now. We don't have the money or time to all the DUI stuff again and he drives a company truck to work, so it's effecting his job!

Uh, one question. If he does not have a driver's license how is he driving a company truck to work? He's going to be caught and then what?..... Keep calling the people in Alabama. Men don't try hard enough. Why don't you try calling on his behalf? I know I am persistent when it comes to me and eating regularly and I can get answers to questions. I just call and speak to someone and then ask to speak to their supervisor, etc. and I keep calling and calling as I need this answer (paper, whatever) and I get results. I am a whiz on the phone when it comes to getting somewhere with people who are jerks with other people.

If push comes to shove have him take the DUI class in Georgia. Do anything to keep his driver's license. Do whatever it takes to appease Georgia DMV and go on with your life. It can't be that many hours (days, etc) for the class, can it? Then he will be aokay with Georgia.

Ok, first understand that unless he cleared his license in Alabama, and submit all of his evidence of doing all of the required items to the court. And get the Alabama suspension released first, he was not suppose to even be allowed to get a GA drivers license, so at this point, they finally caught the orginal error. There is no statue of limitation on this, the SOL would be from the time he did the crime to the time he was charged, so the SOL ended when he was written that ticket.

And yes, unless he can prove to Alabama that all of thier requirements were meet and have them release his suspension, he will have to redo the requirements here. And if he can not prove it, ( contact the schools ?)
he needs to take off work and get this done at the next class. Fast.
Also he needs to stop driving at all untill this is done.

Georgia passed some new laws that went into effect today, one of them is two days in jail for the first driving without a license and if caught 4 times, it is a felony.

He took all the classes in Alabama, paid fines, and surrendered his lisence in Alabama. He didn't have lisence for a year. When he moved to Georgia, he got his lisence reinstated and the state patrol didn't say anything about the Alabama stuff to him.

I'm going to contact Alabama myself and try to get this straightened out!
