    Shoplifting/Notice Prohibiting Entry
I'm 26 years old and I'm in Canada studying English. I was caughted shoplifting. The store's security then call the mall's security and the police.
The mall's security gave me a NOTICE PROHIBITING ENTRY and took a picture of me.
The police arrived and then they checked if I had a criminal record. After they took some informations about me (date of birth, address of the hotel I'm staying, school name.. ).
They let me go without having to pay anything... They said I was lucky this time.
I'm so confused... That was the silliest thing I've ever did in my life.
What is going to happen? Can they call my school? Is it going to be on my criminal records?
What about the notice I got from the security of the mall?
    Thank you so much.
I really fell bad and learn the lesson.

Odd's are they have it on record, especially if u had no previous record, which I'm assuming is the case. But be on alert, don't return to that store, ever... You have a private record which means if your ever caught again this will be used against you as well as the new charge. You're a student, things are hard, no money and lots of wants, but don't risk it all, the school won't be informed, because it's your business but don't risk it twice, your were treated with respect and given a break, be thankful, you could have blow everything your working on achieving!!

It's not only that store... You have been banned from going to that mall. If the mall's security staff finds you on the premises, they may charge your with trespassing and re-open the shoplifting charges on you... and if that happens you will have a criminal record.

If a year or two, you'll probably be able to go back to the mall without worrying. By that time you'll be old news and they'll have a heap of new people to be on the lookout for.

You really did get off lucky.
Most other retailers would have been much more aggressive with charging you for shoplifting.

Is it considered shoplifting to consume something that you intend to purchase in a store before actually paying for it (e.g. a can of soda), even if you intend to pay for it all along and in fact do pay for it immediately after consuming it?
