What is the law on a 17 year old owning a car and paying insurance
I would like to know what the law is on owning a car and being able to put insurance on it.
Do you have to be 18 to own a car?
Do you have to be 18 to put insurance on a car if you own it and are under age?
Can you register the car if you are under 18 years of age?

Generally, an under-eighteen year old is a minor and may not enter into enforceable contracts. An 18 year old may own a car, but may not register it or purchase insurance. But, if it were me, I might try, but it may be risky. It would be a bummer to purchase insurance, have a wreck fifteen minutes later, and have the insurer deny the claim because the contract is invalid.

You are going to have to prove how old you are at several places in the purchase of the car and the purchase of the insurance. I am sure someone will catch on that you are not 18 yet. Your parents can purchase the car for you and put you on their insurance carrier if you are not 18 yet.

Your parents can buy a car and put it in your and their name. A person under 18 can not legally sign a contract. So you can't buy a car, can't sign for insurance and so on.

My friend was 16 and bought a car. The guy took his money and then reported the car as stolen. The cops came and got it and then the kid couldn't prove that he'd bought the car. Wait till your 18 and legally able to sign contracts and pay your taxes!
