| I believe you are right... I remember when I went through basic and a lot of other people just dropped out, I dont know what the ramifications were though. Some of them just failed out on purpose, which I believe gave them an other than honorable discharge. If you just dont show up you can end up with a dishonorable discharge, and pretty mush ruin your reputation for any other good jobs.
I must say that you staying back for your GF will not help her as much as you going into the national guard will. by the time you get done with basic and AIT she will most likely still be pregnant and you can return in time to be with her.
The benefits of the military are pretty good, especially being so young as you are. They will give you the support for your child, such as medical care and extra money to support the child.
I am not totally sure about the National Guard though, I am talking about Active Army (I did 5 1/2 years). You can speak to your recruiter and he/she will be able to guide you better on what your choices are. Of course they are not going to like you pulling out of the contract...but if you really think you can support your gf and child, then I guess you just need to do what is right for you.
I do believe if you back out you can never try to get back in..but that may not be true nowdays with the need for soldiers...just something to think about if you ever want to go back. |
