Yes you can fire your public defender, in fact if you can hire a private attoreny, normally the public defender will merely withdraw. You should hire your attorney, have them meet with the public defender to get brought up to speed. If you are in the middle of a trial, your attorney will have to request for time to review teh case ( but the judge does not have to allow this time, but normally will unless they view this as just a way to drag the case on.
