I really need to know how long you could wait to press charges on someone that I know who broke into a house and stole stuff.

    You should do it asap'
The longer you wait the less credible you sound and the less evidence there could be.

Are you going to be turning this police report over to your insurance company to collect on the items stolen or are you going to have this person prosecuted for the crime? Do you know for a fact that a certain individual broke into your home, do you have witnesses to this crime, or have you been contacted by a pawn shop that has your stolen items? How long ago was this break in?

    Hello D:

You don't have more than a couple hours. Any longer than that the cops are going to suspect that you have ulterior motives for calling.

Given your question, I think you do too. The cops shouldn't be used for a personal vendetta.

    Hello H:

The statute of limitations varies depending on what state you live in... But, in general they have 3 years.
