Hello t:

Court is not like school. You don't have to bring a note from your doctor. Your lawyer just has to request a postponement based upon medical grounds. The judge will believe him.

If you don't have a lawyer, the judge should believe you too. If he doesn't, he'll tell you what he wants to see.

This depends upon what kind of court date you are speaking of. If it has anything to do with a criminal matter, then your attorney should be able to handle this for you. If it is a civil matter, and you do not have an attorney, you can write a letter to the judge and tell him the reason for the postponement. Also send a copy of your letter to the opposing attorney. If you want to when you write to the judge, you may attach a letter or RX from your attending physician stating just when you would be able to attend any court proceedings. Don't wait until the last minute to send the letter to the judge either as this could be denied. Be sure to put your name, mailing address and phone number on your letter so his judicial assistant can call you if there is any problem. (be sure to say something to the effect that you would like to know one way or another if the judge agrees with your request.) Don't assume that your request will be automatically granted. The judge just might see otherwise.

You posted that a friend is going to have carotid artery surgery - I think the posts should be combined.
