first time theft under $5000

today i was caught as an accomplice to theft under 5000. my friend stole 3 bottles of perfume from a department store in ontario and put them in a shopping bag of mine and then walked out. he was caught and we were both brought in. the officer said i was an accomplice even though i had not actually taken anything off of the shelf. I know I am just as liable because I knew what was going on. what can I do to defend myself, is it best to just comply and say i am guilty, i cannot get a criminal record as i am going through fro social work and this would end my career. is there something i can do??? I am so scared. I am 22 and can't imagine living if this charge is set against me...

You are 22?

I would NOT plead guilty.

And I would get a lawyer and fight it.

Because how you make it sound, you feel your are innocent.

But then, you knew what was going on. So it will be a calculated risk.

Get a lawyer, perhaps get it off your record, perhaps the diversion program.

thank you for your response, i have read alot on this site and see that pleading guilty and getting a lawyer is probably the best option. i have an appointment set with one for tomorrow. the diversion program, which i have looked into seems like it is something that will hopefully be an option when it comes down to it. i just wish there was something that could be done about the level of guilt i feel.
