I was caught stealing from an empolyer, the total amount stolen was about 10,000,cost. When I was confronted about the stolen merchandise. I confessed and coroperated immediately with my employer. I even went with the head of lost prevention to try in retrive some of the stolen property. When asked what happened why I did it. I explained I do suffer from bi-polar disorder and have been off medication for months. I was stealing and selling the merch. To restore my checking account to positve. A problem that most suffers with this particular mental disorder have. After trying to go to the place where the merch. Had been sold the co. that I sold it to said, that my co. would have to make a police report. Which they have now done. The head of loss prevention explained if there was any other way they would take that road, however, filing a police report is the only option. After we left from trying to retrive the merch. I voluntarily admitted myself back into a mental health and behavioral center for the 3rd time, because of my mental health. I received conseling and treatment and have been staying on my medication. I received a phone call from the city police dept. saying I have to come down on Thursday to give a statement. The detective said I would not be arrested. That a statement has to be attained then forward back to my loss prevention dept. where any furthure charges will be determined. I'm nervous and terrified. Unfortunately with my mental disorder I seem to have a real problem with memory. Especially when I am trying to recall a time I was manic. I don't want them to think I am lying. I don't know if I should contact a lawyer already or wait to see if any charges are filed. My other worry is I have been applying to other jobs because, well I have to work. I'm worried about what might already be on my backround check. Could these possible charges be showing already? If I am charged with a felony theft, what then? I have never had any priors. How, greatly is this going to effect my life and my future chance of getting any type of good job? Wheather it be in health care or maybe sometype of law inforcement? Those where two area's that I was looking at before all this. My co-workers are all shocked. No one would have ever suspected me. I have been a manger for two years with this company and up until now have been a model employee. Have won many awards for my achievements with this company. My guilt and sincer regret is obvious. Any chance for a light sentencing if this does go to court?

I agree with excon. The police lie and anything you say to them will be held against you. Find a good lawyer and have them speak to the police.
