Degree suggestions for a convicted felon.
Hello everyone, I just wanted to post and get some advice on what degrees would be a good idea for a felon to pursue.
I was convicted of Incest when I was 14 years old and now at 21 I am almost done with my Associates degree. I have completed all my treatment and I am also no longer required to register as a sex offender in any state. Before I waste the money going to a university to get a Bachelors degree I wanted to know what fields would just be a waste of time. I have heard that accounting would be a bad idea for a degree, is this true?
I mostly want a degree that will allow me to have financial security. Let me know if more information would help people to give better insight into what I should do.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello J:

I'm not sure if you want the easy way or the harder way... Yes, there are routes for a convicted felon to follow, but they, of course, are necessarily RESTRICTED. That's OK for a fellow like me who LOVES business, and business doesn't often times DO background checks. So, it worked for me...

But, you may want to pursue something a bit harder, such as a CPA where licensing is required... But, your offense happened when you were so young, I believe that MOST licensing boards will take that into consideration when your application comes before them... So, if you want to BE a lawyer, go for it. If you want to be a physician, go for it. I think you can DO anything you choose to do.

Thank you for the reply excon. So when you mention business do you mean things like management or starting your own business? Business was actually one of the ideas that I had been throwing around for an idea for my degree. My only problem is that I don't know how reliable a business degree will be for finding a job!
Thanks again for your encouragement excon.

I can tell you that pretty much anything within a school or anywhere around children is out probably.

Absolutely not true - do you have a site that says this?

I don't know Judy, assuming a registered sex offender that would rule out anything at any school

Not in NY - depends on the level and the crime. I know it sounds strange.

Level 1's (low risk) ARE allowed to actually teach children - there is a current lawsuit in my County over a karate school which parents attempted to shut down because of a level 1 arrest. Owner is claiming discrimination - believe it or not - because NY does NOT preclude this activity.

This OP is no longer required to register. Would he pass a background check? Probably not. In theory could he be hired? I see nothing by law that would preclude his hiring.
