Stole from my employer

Asked Sep 21, 2009, 05:33 PM — 1 Answer
Hey guys...
First time on here but signed up straight away to see if you could help me find an answer...even if its not the one I want?!
I have worked for the same company for two years. It is a finance company.
Throughout that time I have seen and been told to do many things that I shouldn't or didn't feel was right...but was informed that if I didn't I would loose my job.
These involved breaking rules on harassment and confidentiality.
My working hours were over 48 hours a week with pretty much every Saturday being worked by myself - again - with the threat that I had to to keep my job.
Since being there I have hit/over acheived my targets for 16 months out of 24.
Any commission/bonus was achieved by the branch you worked in achiveing target - but if you didn't hit it individually - you got in trouble. It put a huge amount of pressure on you - but it was a job!
I worked over time - not extra pay and if the branch didn't hit target then you got nothing.
All this sounds like I'm playing a sob story but I'm not - I'm just painting an outline for you to understand and hopefully help me better!
Expenses were paid 15 days after you submitted then - this was a fight to get back...but you had spent the fuel knocking on peoples doors when they wouldn't pay you!
As a result of expenses not being paid and then having to use further of my own money to continue being able to do my job - no company car was available - I fell into trouble with my money.
I took approx 1000 from my employer rather than banking it...but I was found out before I could put the money back - which I was and had been for some time.
I walked out the same day saying I was sick - I received a phone call - answerphone from my area manager asking me to call her back but if I didn't I would receive a letter from her the following day.
Rather than ringing her back I awaited the letter it never came.
It has been two weeks and accoridng to old collegues I should have been for two meetings but have never received a phone call or a letter at either my parents address - which they have - or my new address.
I think it may have gone to an old address they had registered.
However, they must have received it back as not known at address - as this has happened to my credit card as I forgot to change the address - so they froze it until I sent proof of address change.
I have still not heard anything and it has been just over two weeks - I have spoke to a solicitor and they have advised me to ring them and find out where this letter is, what is happening etc but I'm so scared I daren't even pick up the phone and dial their number let alone speak to them.
You have to bare in mind this company has a rputation for being able to rip people apart...
What do I do?
Do I wait to see if they continue?
Do I do nothing?
Do I send them a letter asking to communicate via correspondance only?
I have been informed that if they do not inform the police within a certain time - normally as soon as they realise the money has gone and nobody admitts it then they can not pursue it?
Do I write to them and offer to pay the money back?
Im confused and worried - I've never done anything like this before and did it because I couldn't cope with the working hours and the pressure of my debts due to the extra cost the company was knowingly or not knowling causing me....
HELP?!?!?!

Am I correct - boiling this all down, all excuses about unreasonable goals and needing the job aside - that you stole from your employer and have not paid it back?

There is no law that says if you feel you were being paid unfairly you can steal from the employer to make up the difference.

Return the money and you might have a chance at not being prosecuted.
