what exactly is a peppermill

I have whole grain peppercorns. I have a small pepper mill(or it just a dispenser) with a crank handle on top. but it will not grind a whole peppercorn. I have to put the peppercorns in a plastic bag and beat them with a mallet. maybe I should get a mortar and pestle?

is there a large pepper mill that has blades to grind up the whole peppercorns
or what???? puzzled

There must be something wrong with your pepper mill because there are all designed to grind whole pepper seeds. Get a decent one then go to a bulk foods store and get soem 4-peppercorn mix: colorful and tasty!
