I have hired a handy man to replace windows in my house. I have a feeling that he mis represented himself and his experience as he does not seem to really know what he's doing. Three of the windows are in and the patio door is tomorrow.

My biggest concern is our big front window. It has been ordered and will arrive in afew weeks. My concern is that this window will not have the nailing flanges that the stock ones did. Could someone out there fill me in on the proper way to install a replacement window with no flanges? It is 96x48, picture window in the center and a single hung on each side. We ordered it without flanges because the installer has been trashing my siding putting the other stock ones in and this one can just slide into the opening.

The windows with flanges are meant for new construction where they go in before the siding. I guess they could be retrofitted beneath existing siding, but it would be a tricky, tedious job. The ones without flanges nail the window frames into the sides of the rough opening. They require careful shimming to keep from bowing the window frame.

Level and square that window up. If you do not and it is a bow window it could cause the rain water to leak into the house. it could also make the windows hard to open. Also do not forget to insulate the cracks around all the new windows because a lot of air can leak in thru those cracks. Most large bay / bow windows have built in levels to help you with this.
