Efflorescence on garage floor

Asked Nov 25, 2011, 11:04 AM — 2 Answers
I've been reading forums about efflorescence and the issues people been having. I live in an area that has water issues, basically our neighborhood was built is old swamp lands. I have a non stop flow of water from the edge of lawn to street (spring water). I noticed efflorescence in one area of my crawl space, but it just started building up on garage floor. I just recently stocked up on rock salt, about 20 bags that is stored in the garage. Shortly after, I noticed the floor has this white fuzzy stuff all over it. I'm just curious to know can storing rock salt in a garage have this type of effect too? Far as the 20 bags go, I have a really steep driveway and I'm deploying to Afghanistan during our winter in NC. Wife will have to do the first winter on her own, I just prepped for it. I'd rather have to much than not enough.

Put the salt on a woooden pallet rather than directly on the floor. This will allow some air circulation and cut down on the "fuzz"

Hi NC,

I appears that you you have an obvious water/moisture issue. I agree with the previous poster to put your salt bags up on a pallet...but only after laying down some 6mm plastic sheathing beneath the pallet. You will then be fine for a while. Upon your return we need to address the issue of the moisture/water in your garage for the long haul.

Be safe in your deployment.

Efflorescence [ 1 Answers ]

We have efflorescence in two areas of our cinder block basement, which is completely below grade. Sloping the grade away from the house is very difficult due to existing driveways and patios.
