Computer "chimes" periodically

I'm on WinXP - and my computer chimes, with the same sound as if I've received a new email, periodically for no reason.

Even when I've only got one program open (that has no sound features).

Does anyone know how I can figure out what is causing it?

Thank you.

How do you connect to the Internet? Do you keep your e-mail client running all the time? Do you check in the system tray foe a new mail notice?

Do you have any USB devices, like a printer, attached that have a power save function.
What you may be getting is an alert when it coems out of power save and reconnects
