windows XP hangs frequently

Hi..whenever i run an anti-virus scan of big files like that of a drive(10 GB space covered), my computer hangs. Also it hangs everytime a play a hefty game like NFS etc. I use Quick Heal anti virus. There is no problem in anti virus for sure as i downloaded it from the website itself. Please help as I dont have my motherboard cd as well.

If it were always a problem with "hefty" games I'd first guess a memory problem. Do you have the system requirements for those games? But I don't know why the virus scan would get hung up for that reason.

No, that doesn't really sound like a virus, but don't assume just cause you downloaded it from their site that it's not a problem.

thanks for your concern...system requirements are fine Morgaine...those games used to go fine only before...a scan of Gb limits hangs else it's running properly...i tried wid another antivirus but same thing occurs...also sometimes system restarts by itself...and then on restarts a message pops up sayin windows has recovered from a serious error...only option i foresee now is that of formatting my windows XP...but since i dont hv the motherboard CD I'll struggle for drivers for sure...can u suggest something else?

Clean your hard drive. You should know that often you have to start from scratch.
Every year is recommend by some.
Sometimes you get so much crap you have no choice, all that crap sticks to your hard drive. When you are using heavy graphics, that is really hard on your system.
In the future get a software prog that will help you to play your games. They are out there.
Time for a reinstall,in my opinion.

Did you never get a restore CD or you lost it? If you never had one, it might have it in a hidden partition. If you lost it, you can contact either the place where you got it, or the manufacturer and see if you can get another one. If you post the kind of computer, someone may know the best answer to that.

You also might be able to get all the necessary drivers from the manufacturer site. The bad thing about that is that even then, sometimes they don't end up working. Once you've wiped it out, it's too late to find that out.

Have you tried one of the clean-up programs? I'm not familiar with them cause I reinstall Windows clean at least once a year if not more often -- but there's references to them in about a gazillion different posts around here.

Comments on this post
artlady agrees: sometimes reinstall is the only answer, too much crap on the system, espicially when you do heavy graphics,as in games or in my case artwork,

You may need to reinstall.
How long have you been using the same comp and running all these heavy graphic progs?

Here's a decent one. Read the whole page:
glaryutilities

And the other posters are correct, but it may also be the anti-virus program itself that's hanging your system.
Get rid of Quick Heal, and go with:
Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus

And you can use this for off line scanning an repair:
Malwarebytes

That's a good point about the virus scanner. I've never heard of Quick Heal though. (I do know that the infamous Norton does some pretty strange stuff, which is why I don't use it.)

I personally use Avast, also free:
avast! Virus Cleaner - free virus removal tool

Hi! morgaine,

As soon as I saw the name quickheal (qh), my firewall ~( instinct )~ kicked in, and I put out a post to one of my other tech forums,
I'm also aware of Snort's instabilities.

tarun's qh may only need tweaking to "play" better with NFS, but there is something deeper 'bout that full scan he does.
It could even be the hang when he plays NFS, that causes the full scan problem.

Being the weekend, its a little slow on the other forum, but I expect an answer soon.

I only throwed those three out there 'cuz their usually pretty reliable. Surprisingly, the AVG8 an ZA that I have, have been keepin' up.
I run glary, malwarebytes, JKDefrag, and WOT.

WinXpSp3
AMD 1.8ghz
2GB Ram
Chrome, FF, IE7
