windows media player won't play video, only audio

My windows media player will only play audio and not video. any ideas why?

A couple of nice software packages to use instead of Windows media player, is Media Player Classic or Video Lan (VLC) media player which has built-in codecs.

Then you need a codecs pack such as ffdshow, which has compatible codecs for xvid, divx, mp4, etc.

Okay, stupid question. How do I update all my codecs? I downloaded a documentary that has the video but no audio. Exact opposite of Anderson's situation.

See my first post above. Ffdshow can be downloaded as a .exe file. Just run it and codecs will be installed.
