    Typing letters-getting numbers1
How do I correct this problem with my laptop? Qwerty456-asdfgh123zxcvbn0. When I type uiop, I get 456-, if I type jkl. I get 123- the only way I can get all letters is by holding down a key marked Fn. What's wrong?

    Curlyben
Turn OFF your Num Lock (Number Lock).

    Marianne,

First, please look at your keyboard and see if the light is on under the Num Lock symbol.

Also, since you are using a laptop, do the letters correspond with the characters you are hitting, as in you press "a' and get a "1" and "b" gets you a "2".

There are several possibilities, the simplest of which is a CurlyBen indicated is the Num Lock key being "ON". The "Fn" stands for Function.

Next is a little more difficult, if the keyboard has the wrong language code points assigned to it. For that you need know how to weed through the various code pages on your laptop.

Also, probably the easiest thing to do is to restore factory defaults to the laptop. Or you can try doing a Start> Accessories>System Tools> Restore. And restore to a date prior to the keyboard going wacky.

Your laptop should have a "FunctionKey" the key with "FN" push the FN key should release the numlock feature, unless of course there is a numlock key

    Mine is labeled "Num lk"
Note that those characters have little numbers on the keys.

    UIOP is 456*
    JKL: is 123-
    M is 0

I'm sure you've tried tis but try holding down the key and press the keys till the proper key shows up
Worse case, your num lk key is not working and would need repair, at this point this is the scenario as it is not a software issue, it I sthat your key is stuck in the Number position, you can only try to tap this key to get it to go back, but in the end the key is malfunctioning
