transferring files

I didn't know what category to put this under.
My computer went out a couple days ago. It was a presario compaq and I was running windows xpsp2. I called HP and explained what it was doing and they said it was my hard drive. I have ordered a new computer. At this time I'm using a friends computer and was wondering is there a way I can get the files I want (pictures, my favorites folder ect.) off of my broken computer and transfer them to this computer so I can put them on to cd's and be able to put them on my new computer when it gets here?
Any help would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks
