Things to do to clean my PC?

Asked Nov 10, 2009, 08:14 PM — 7 Answers
The title explains it all. I have my programs and batch files that I run but just wondering if there is more that I can do.

Let me know what you do to keep your PC's clean and running top-notch.

Lazy is my default state, so I thought about your question for awhile and all I could come up with that I actively do is:
  1. Keep antivirus/security suite software signatures current (automatic daily update).
  2. Keep Windows patched manually (monthly).
  3. Install all applications, normally using the custom install option, on one drive (C:\Program Files) and store documents on another (D:\).
  4. Avoid running a single hard drive in favor of a RAID array whenever possible.
  5. Only download software from a reputable source and for that which is unknown, extract and run on a guinea pig machine instead of my primary.
  6. Use Firefox and look closely at the actual URL for email links before clicking on them.
  7. Use Microsoft certified drivers when possible and components with certified drivers when building.
  8. Don't buy the cheapest anything.
  9. Use a UPS - uninterruptible power supply.
  10. Read and thoroughly understand error messages before taking action.

*shrug* Since I started using Windows XP, my computing has been uneventful, although the patch effort required and the direction Microsoft's newer OSs are heading has me leaning strongly toward Linux for my next desktop machine.

CCleaner is a pretty good "cleaner" to eliminate unneeded temporary files, etc.

I use CCleaner and I also use index analyzer and when I use CCleaner to clean everything including .that files. I can then go into Index analyzer and see that it didn't clean a lot of them.

I guess I got the answers I wanted. I like CCleaner as well. I actually do use it.
