I been unable to copy-paste photos from my digital camera because of not enough memory.(?).This is a new situation because I could do that previously.
I run a 8300 DELL computer,256 RAM and try not to run any other program while working with the process of transferring photos.If a I do copy-paste from files in my hard disk it works OK.Thanks

Hi,
By today's standards, 256 RAM really isn't that much. But, it does seem as if you are running out of memory while trying to copy and paste.
You mentioned turning off or disabling other programs. Do you disable your anti-virus program? If not, do so, and turn off any screensavers, or wallpaper.
You might also try a good, free program; Ccleaner. From:
http://www.ccleaner.com.
With just two clicks, it will clear the clipboard, cache, junk files, temp files, etc.
Also, re-booting sometimes help if you have done a lot on the computer. Re-boot, then try copying and pasting from the camera, with all the above disabled or turned off.

One other note...

I've seen this "error" pop-up sometimes when your try to CUT & PASTE rather than COPY & PASTE from a digital camera.

I don't know why it happens, but I have seen it happen and they most quick way around was to Copy rather than Move the files.

Is there a particularly large file being copied from the camera?

Also have you checked your virtual memory settings and free hard disk space?

The large file I was trying to copy-paste was 80 photos from my kodak camera,and yes I am interested in learning about virtual memorly and free space in the disk.I`ll appreciate your instructions.Thanks

How are you copying from the camera? This is a critical piece of info. If you are using a cable, then you could be having memory issues because you have to be using software provided by the camera. But if you are using a memory card that that shouldn't apply.

So please explain exactly what you are doing so we can give you a more accurate answer.

One thing I forgot!
If I try to "copy and paste" that many images from my usb digital camera at one time, I sometimes get the same reaction!
If you copy only a few at a time, it will, hopefully, work much better. I have never tried 80 photos, and I'm sure it would stop before it copied all of them.
I use Win98SE, and would probably copy these in groups of 10, rather than trying to copy the entire folder of photos.

Yes I tried to send the 80 photos in groups of 10 ,but that did not work either.But now that I follow your instructions on getting the PC in better shape by using de Ccleaner and deleting Norton and installing AVG I made a test with 12 photos and work OK,at this time those were the only photos in my camera the former 80 I deleted,but hopefully when I get a new larger set of photos it will be just fine.I`ll let you know.Thanks again.
By the way, I am inviting friends of mine to do just what I did following your hints.
Oh I forgot to mention that I use ma camera with a cable and use the cameras software .with the difference that I send the photos not to the kodak album,where I have big trouble moving pictures,but to a different file in my hard disk.

Does your camera have a memory card? I've gotten much better performance usiing a memory card reader then transferring directly from the camera. If youhave a memory card and don't have a memory card reader you can get one that will connect to your USB port. I've found it's a lot easier, faster and smoother to copy from the memory cards then via a cable.

Yes I have a memory card in my camera,but I don't know about a memory card reader in my PC.Mine is a dimension DELL 8300

Many newer PCs have memory card readers built in. If not you can purchase one for about $30 that will connect to your USB port and allow you to read several types of cards.

Sorry for the delay in returning these instructions, looks like you may have another solution but I thought I'd post them anyway!

Hard disk space - this is the amount of unused space on your computer you can check this by opening "my computer" and right clicking your "C" drive. This will show you a pie chart describing free and used space on your drive.

You need to have enough space on this disk to store your documents (generally not a problem these days, but it depends on how many photos etc you are storing. I don't like to let the free space get much below one Gigabyte (GB).

Virtual Memory
To check this right click "My computer" and select "properties".
On the first screen that comes up, check the amount of RAM you have, it should be somewhere near the bottom under "Computer:"
Next go to the "Advanced" tab and click the "settings" button within the "Performance" section.
Click the "advanced" tab and look at the "total paging file size for all drives" value, it should be between 1.5 and 2 times the RAM value you checked earlier.
If it is less than this you should increase this value.
to do this, click change and then either set it to system managed size or custom size
if you choose custom, make the initial size 1.5 times your ram and the maximum 2X your ram.
Also make sure you have enough additional file space on your drive to accommodate the new size.

Hope this makes sense.

p.s. these instructions are for windowsxp & 2000 systems, don't change these values unless you are experiencing memory or virtual memory problems.

Not a delay at all.I follow your instructions and found that my RAM is 256 and the "other" memory is 500 which is 2 times bigger,anyway and just to see what happened I ask for a change using one of the options they offer but when I rebooted the new number was 382,much less than I had,so I changed again I am back to the originally 500.Well,at least now I know how to get to my virtual memory (and change it if needed).
