There are numerous flavours of Linux that are available free.
One of the easiest to use is Ubuntu available here: Homepage | Ubuntu

I have to spread rep, but I wanted to say that I agree. I love Ubuntu. I run it on my laptop and it works wonderfully.

Linux Mint deserves some consideration because it comes with support for video and audio files not available on Ubuntu's base install.

well ubuntu(and for that matter the vast majority of linux distros) have comparability issues with anything BUT nvidia graphics cards. (ati's run flat out, if you get them to run). Other considerations are open bsd or free bsd. basically linux reprogrammed from the ground up.
