cant get pics on profile

I know this sounds dumb ,but I am when it comes to computers.
can someone tell me in a step by step easy to understand way,
Howdo I put a pic on my profile i tried to put one on and it said The file was to big or something. And how do you guys put those pictures of things not yourself is that easier?

The MAXIMUM size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).
