This is sounding like it should be in Philosophy not Children. Your child might be too young at this point to understand the concept. The concept is simple - telling what really happened is the truth ("I broke the glass"), telling something that did not happen is not the truth ("daddy broke the glass"). Don't complicate things for a young child.

You know what honesty is. You can explain what it is to your child. Explaining tactfulness is different. Actually, if he dislikes the cakes, he can honestly, and politely say so. Or he can have a bite and say that he's not hungry for cake anymore.

My ten year old is tactful with her Grandma. She amazes me with her patience, Grandma forgets what she just said and says it again, and again. Later, I compliment my daughter on her tactful behavior, and she just shrugs and sighs. "It makes me tired, but I know that Grandma doesn't know that she is saying things over and over."

Honesty is best, with tact. Children learn best when they can take their cues from us so you can be there to help.
