every child is differant and develops at their own pace...just keep up the banter,reading esp,and they will get the idea..once they start,you'll wonder why you ever worried!
I agree with Redhead, my 2 1/2 year old talks and talks. I spend a lot of time reading with her (letting her hold the book), singing Mother Goose Rhymes and songs...I even got a karaoke and sing and dance with her on occasion.
Ask them questions and interact with them as much as you can (as to what your doing, why and how - even if your cleaning the house - I am vacuuming the house so the house is clean and you can play better - or something. When your shopping...what your buying, color and that it's yummy. People always give me funny looks - but I don't care...I like talking to my kids and that's why mine talk so much and know quite a bit for their age. She can count to 20 and say the A,B,C's with little or no help...she can also say the "Our Father, Hale Mary and Glory Be to God" all by herself...she is 2 1/2...she can dress herself, pick her clothes out, go to the potty, no soother, puts her toys away, try to fix her bed, put her dirty clothes in the laundry basket and seat herself at the table - without instruction! (She really copies me...follows me everywhere talking and talking!) She even tries to help me with dishes and laundry??? I know!!! Cute but I always tell her "you don't have to help mommy...you can play with your toys" - she says "No mommy, I help you!" She plays with her brother and roams the house where she wants (which I supervise). She came a long way from where we where 8 months ago (when we moved out of the grandparents house and the TERRIBLE TWO'S) and I praise her all the time. Even when she does something not so great...I tell her why it's bad and what the right thing to do is (usually when it comes to sharing stuff).
Also find programs that are good for them to watch (She loves Sesame Street, Mi Ky Kaylan (Sp?), Dora and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse).
Choose some simple books and interact with them (like picture books of animals amongst all other categorizes like food, automobiles/planes, colors, numbers and clothing) and at night I read the Once Upon A Time stories (old fashioned Rumpelstiltskin, Puss in Boots, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Ugly Duckling and new Disney ones too).
There are some really neat flash cards out there too...you could make it like a game...my daughter knows what an Ostrich and Hippo is...and some other odd animals.
I don't really talk down to her as if she was 2 1/2, I talk normal, I don't change my voice or change my vocabulary around her...she catches on and uses these words once she begins to understand what it means (she makes her own associations after a while) but of course we have to try to use simple words so they understand it more fully.
Redundancy is what I found helped the best...so keep it up and you will see you had nothing to worry about.
