My niece is 6yrs old

Asked Aug 8, 2012, 05:03 PM — 7 Answers
My niece is 6 yrs old and she was at my house having play day with my son. My husband was in our bedroom and she tells him that she wants to see his penis. Is this something I should be concern should I speak to the mom?

Yes, I'd ask the mother if she's aware of similar conversations, activities.

Were they supervised? What were they watching on TV?

How old is your son?

Yes they where either my mom myself or my husband watch them. My son is also 6 and they only watch cartoons. It was very surprising the way she came out and out of no where she told him she wanted to see my husbands penis we where shocked

Hmm - I still think I'd ask the mother. It would shock/surprise me, too. I don't know how I would have reacted, whether I would have had a knee jerk reaction.

I would speak to the mother. I assume she goes to school, I'm sure she doesn't know what she's talking about. She probably heard it from a kid at school. A kid that is less supervised and is subjected to much much more than the average child at that age.

Kids have a tendency to repeat what they hear, I can almost guarantee she didn't come up with it on her own. So yes, talk to her mother someone needs to talk to her and let her know that that isn't appropriate.

I remember kids that age and a little older at a summer swimming camp I ran. As they changed in and out of bathing suits, girls would comment on the boys, everything from 'what's that!!??' to 'that's a penis and boys have them, and they are OK.' It was clear that some girls at that age had been taught some anatomy and others hadn't, but virtually all of them were totally ingenuous about it. It's possible that she was approached by boys who asked if she wanted to see theirs. Something like that happened to me, I think. I also remember walking around naked after swimming and some boys hooting and I had no clue why. In other words, it's generally parents making a big deal about it that turns it into something taboo.

I would talk to her mother. It CAN be just a normal curiosity. i know lots of children ages 3-6 who ask to see bobbies, vagina's and penises. it could just be normal curiosity.

however, mom needs to be aware its happening, so she can talk to her daughter about it, and teach her appropriate behavior and manners. and of course watch for warning signs of abuse.
