They should check with local churches and charities for homeless shelters.

Public housing may not be available there due to the felony if it was recent. All the other sources listed should help. Have you tried the Salvation Army to see what they have? There are also some church groups that can help. Times are tough and you may have to go to several sources to get what you need.
