Baby due operation for tongue tie and am scared
My 6 month old son is due an operation as his tongue is unable to move from the bottom of his mouth.
He is due the operation on Friday 13th ( yes I know I froze when I read the date)
Has anyone else come across this operation as I am frantic with worry.

    Hi,

Is he having a frenulectomy? The strip of skin under the tongue it too tight and it's being cut?

My understanding is that unless the child is having trouble feeding that it usually isn't recommended until age 1. Some children can outgrow it, by about age 3, as well.

It's not a complicated procedure but I'd get a second opinion.

The skin under the tongue is very tight he can hardly move his tongue - it has not caused him any problems so far - but he is still a baby and of course feeding with lumpy food may be a problem.

OK, I thought that was what he is having done.

Depending upon the extent of the procedure it is usually fairly quick. Maybe 15 minutes or so. If they give a general anesthesia to the baby it will take a bit longer. They don't use a knife, rather a cauterizer is used so there is minimal bleeding. A couple of stitches should be all that you see when it's done.

Please let us know how he does.

My husband has tongue tie but not so bad that it gives him a speech impediment or problems eating. Considering the degree of immobility your baby has with the tongue-tie; you are doing the right thing and your child will be so much better off in the future. They say it isn't as painful as we think and it heals very fast (usually oral wounds heal pretty quick... depending on what is going on of course).

Some think that the 13 is actually a lucky number... maybe babe will start saying words when it's all over and healed! :)

    Good luck!
