Hi,

I have recently gone back to work, after being home for two years with my children. Soon after, my 22 month old started waking in the night, after months of sleeping through, screaming. Once she wakes up, it is really hard to get her back to sleep, she will scream at the top of her lungs if I leave the room.
She has a pretty routine day, and all that has changed is I have gone back to work, part time, three days a week. Please help me figure out why she is doing this as the lack of sleep is really taking its toll on all of us, including my 4 year old daughter.

My son did that for a year, I couldn't leave the house and I guess he sensed it. He would cry and scream and the minute I walked back in the house he would be quiet... try to keep her up durning the day, try not to let her go to sleep, if she does take a nap wake her back up in an hour or so... if all else fails, try putting her in a warm bath for 30 minutes, it worked for my son it might work for her to...

As a kid, as odd it may seem, I was afraid of the pattern on the drapes. It was a white silohette of trains repeating horizontally every 6" or so, on a dark brown background. Nasty drapes as far as I was concerned.

Sounds like your 22 month old is going through separation anxiety. My older daughter had a hard time when we would put her down in her own bed after moving her there from her crib. She just would get up and sleep walk to our bed and stand there until we put her back in the crib instead of the bed.

Sometimes she would cry herself to sleep. The doctor told us that she was having a harder time adjusting to the regular bed due to anxiety. She's now 18 and still has some anxiety attacks. I don't know if they are related or not, but I would go and see her pediatrician and see what recommendations you can get.

Let me see, if there is no phsycial problem, you let the child cry and discover that they are not going to control your behavior by crying and soon they stop after several days of you putting them back to bed and then leaving the room,

It is the same thing you did ( I assume) to get them to go to bed, learn to sleep though the night and so on)

Your daughter is having separation anxiety, You need to keep repeating yourself and telling her that you will come back. It may take awhile for her to get use to you leaving but I'm sure she will.

It could be speration anxiety but it also could be night terrors most kids started getting them by 2. whatever you do don't wake them even if they seem awake don't talk to them you know the que's they have when they are really awake mine will say "mommy i love you, mommy" and I know that its time for me to go in but if there not and just making the screaming sound leave her be. See if she calms down. If she isn't an easy kid to wake up go in and rub her back lightly shell know its you and probibly calm down. My 6 yr old did this for almost a month but eventually she didn't need me to rub her back she would just moan and go back to sleep. If it is night terrors talk to your daughter about bad dreams and that if you imagine telling them to go away and leave you alone. They tend to do it. I still do that myself and it works.
