There could be a lot of reasons, and many of them are perfectly normal. I've a friend who didn't talk until he was over three, simply because all his brothers were so loud he felt he couldn't compete. He's now a member of Mensa, so it didn't hold him back.

However, I would get a good hearing check, as hearing problems can definitely slow down speech.

That's not an accurate test. You need to take him to a hearing specialist, they'll do a test to make sure everything is okay.

If his hearing is fine then you'll need to see a speech pathologist next. When dealing with a child with delayed speech, the sooner you get help, the better.

There are many wonderful programs that can help so that he won't fall behind when he starts school.

Don't let this go, get the testing done.

See a speech therapist. My son was not talking at 2 1/2 and his hearing was perfectly okay. He had a problem when he was born in that I had preeclampsia and almost died and he was denied oxygen for a few minutes during his birth. Once that problem was diagnosed the speech therapist taught him sign language to communicate his needs such as more food, more drink, go for a walk, take a bath, etc. and was teaching him at the same time how to make sounds on his own. I would have weekly homework to do with him between appointments. Within 6 months he was talking and a few months later he was making complete sentences. All his life he was a little timid when it came to new things in school but once he mastered the task he was an excellent student. Now he's 26 and won't shut up... and is very smart.

My suggestion to you if you do not have much money is to call up speech therapists and see if they have an intern program where you don't have to pay as much per session as the intern would be doing some of the work. That was how I had my son seen by the therapist. His therapist went on to be the Director of the Baudowin Oral School at Florida University in Broward County, Florida.
