    newborn with lump on back
A few days after my son was born, my mother noticed a small lump on his back. It is a tiny bit off to the side of his spine, near the top of his back. He is a week old now and it we are pretty sure the bump is getting bigger. It is about an inch or so in length and maybe half that in width and it feels sort of hard. The doctor had him have x-rays but we won't know the results for another week and I'm wondering what could it possibly be?

Hun, what was your delivery like? C-Section? Any problems? Or a perfectly normal delivery?

I was induced 2 days after my due date and was in the delievery room for nearly 24 hours. However, I didn't even start having contractions / dialting until late that evening and was only pushing for about 2 hours. He was a big baby (9lbs 11oz) but everything went perfect.

The lump on his back was where? Anywhere near a shoulder? Is he able to move both arms perfectly?

Its near the top part of his back, parallel to his shoulder blades I guess and its really close to his spine ( at first my mom thought it was part of his spine). And yeah he can move both arms and everything else perfectly fine and he doesn't seem to be in any pain or anything.

I know it's been a long time but did you ever find out what it was? My son is 6 weeks and has the same thing on his lower back near his spine. He was also induced and weighed 9 lbs 11 oz

Did anyone ever find out what this is - my daughter has the same thing. I brought her to her doctor today and he said he didn't know and just to watch it and see if it goes away, gets bigger... pretty nervous about it. The doctor not knowing didn't ease my concern.

My newborn has the same thing, I just got home from the discharge clinic where I asked them to examine it and let me know what it was. According to them this is an indication that my baby has a fractured clavacle/shoulder which would have happened during childbirth. They did not seem remotely concerned by this since my baby shows no indications of being in pain and has a full range of movements. Newborns have incredibly fast healing bones and I have been advised that this will heal completely on its own very quickly.

This most likely occurred because my baby is fairly large, my labor/delivery was very hard and she was hard to push out and got caught up at the shoulders.
