starting birth control

I just got Ortho tri-cyclen from my doctor. I'm at the end of my cycle (my period should come in a day or two), but I'm seeing my boyfriend this weekend and I want to start the pill now so I won't have my period this weekend. I know it won't be an effective birth control method, but will it be effective in preventing my period?
