    How do the names of covalent compounds differ from the names of ionic compounds?

    Basically, you can't just name which one is covalent and which one is ionic. But what you can do is look at the compound and see whether the compound contains both metal-metal element or metal-non metal elements.

    For example: in NaCl: Na is a metal and Cl is a non metal... So the bond between them is ionic.

    In CCl4 : C is non metal and Cl is also non metal... So the bond between them is covalent.

    So what you have to know is that if it is metal-non metal then it is ionic..

    If it is nonmetal-nonmetal then it is covalent...
