If you just have one element, such as H, then you look at your handy periodic table and find the number underneath the atomic symbol. This number is the atomic weight (or molar mass), or the amount of grams in one mole of the element (units are grams/mol). If you have a compound, such as CH3Br, then you simply add up the molar masses of each member (C + 3*H + Br).

So, if you are given a certain number of grams of some element/compound, you can just divide by the molar mass of the element/compound to get the number of moles (though I personally like to think of it as multiplying by the reciprocal of the molar mass, to keep the stoichiometry straight in my head for more complicated questions).

Hope this helped clear it up!
