    Every reaction has a specific rate with which it proceeds. The rate now depends on the concentration of the reactants.

    As time goes, the reaction proceeds further.

    So, if you know the rate of a reaction, you can often estimate the time when the reaction started.

    Of course, this is more complicated than that. The system should be closed for accurate dating and the reaction non reversible.
