decoding of sony ericssonk700i phone

hi i have a sony ericsson phone broutgh to me from USA and whe i insert my sim card it tells me to insert the correct sim .The question is why is it asking me to insert the correct chip.

Because you are trying to use a SIM from a different network from the one it was set up for.
Sounds like it's locked to me.
