problems burning cds

When I burn a cd I get clicks and pops in the music - I have an HP computer running on XP with a combination dvd and cd burner plus an additional cd dvd player. No matter which drive I use to download to the hard drive they both put clicks and pops in the music. DVD's burn just fine with excellent picture and sound quality. The pops remain even if I burn disc to disc using Sonic. If I change to a different burning program ( I have 4 on the computer) they all react in the same manner. When I download to the hard drive using windows media player and then play the music from the hard drive the clicks and pops are still there. Please help !

Unfortunately with these hardware issues the answer is often to swap out the drive and replace it to see if that makes a difference. From what you have said it would not be your sound card (as the DVD player works fine). It is not the software, given that you have tried so many different programs. It is also unlikely that the CD medium is bad, if you have used several disks with the same result. perhaps it is simply the sound output from the drive. I would start by reseating your drive cables (sound, power, interface). If that doesn't help, burners are really cheap these days so spending $30.00 to replace your drive might be the easiest and least frustrating solution. RSM
