CD-ROM drives do not usually read DVD discs. Upgrade your drive to a DVD variant, preferably with a MultiRead logo. Generally:

CD-ROM Drives...
  • Read CD-ROM and CD-Audio discs.
CD-RW Drives...
  • Read CD-ROM and CD-Audio discs.
  • Read/Write CD-R and CD-RW discs.
DVD-ROM Drives...
  • Read CD-ROM, CD-Audio, DVD-ROM, and DVD-Audio discs.
DVD+-RW drives...
  • Read CD-ROM, CD-Audio, DVD-ROM, and DVD-Audio discs.
  • Read/Write CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+-R, DVD+-RW, and perhaps DVD-RAM discs.
Individual optical drive models may support other optical disc formats such as CD-Text, CD-Video, Video CD, DVD-Video, BD-R/RE, etc. Complaints regarding the bewildering array of optical disc formats should be addressed to the Optical Storage Technology association.

A CD/Rom won't read DVDs. Depending on how the data disc was created it might not read one.
