Sneezing in cats is quite natural and it does not necessarily mean there is a problem. But this is not alsways the case of course.
The average lifespan for a cat is about 15-19 years but they can live considerably longer and the fact that your pet is 'getting on' could be a factor.
However he could have also contracted an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) or even managed to get something stuck in his nose which is irritating him and causing him to sneeze.
My advice is to take him to your vet and let him/her check your cat over, especially if there are other symptoms such as runny eyes or nose, wheezing or he has difficulty breathing. I am sure you will agree it is better safe than sorry.
